“Nopera Aoi”: contemporary Noh opera fuses modern music and fashion with traditional performing arts

Contemporary music meets Noh meets fashion in a new “Noh opera” to be performed in Tokyo in December.

Nopera Aoi will be staged at the Hakuju Hall on December 14th.

The cast will include Noh artist Ryoko Aoki — a frequent collaborator with contemporary music — while costume design is by Yoshikazu Yamagata, who runs the fashion label writtenafterwards.

This is the third in a series of innovative new work by Hakuju Hall focusing on new musical forms and this time turns to Noh to create a modern, interdisciplinary work fit for our times.

Part of the music composed by Finland-based songwriter Noriko Baba will also be performed in Paris in 2016. Other collaborators involved in the production include percussionist Hideki Ikegami and flautist Kazushi Saito. Other details have yet to be announced.

Tickets to Noh Opera: Nopera Aoi — An Encounter between Japanese Tradition and Cutting-Edge Creation cost ¥6,000.
