Despite the closure of Ginza’s iconic Kabukiza earlier this year, there doesn’t seem to be a lack of public interest in the genre. Though he’s as much a celebrity as kabuki actor, the intense media attention over Ebizo Ichikawa’s marriage to Mao Kobayashi (and her subsequent assumption of rien no tsuma [梨園の妻] duties) is indicative of a continued popular preoccupation at least in the personalities behind the art.
Shochiku has now released its kabuki website in English. As much a portal for information and booking facilities for its productions, the site is a rich resource for anyone who wants to learn about Kabuki besides just reading the Wikipedia page.
It will likely be particularly useful for first-time visitors, as there is plenty of information and tips to explain all the oblique ins and outs of a Kabuki performance.
